Talledega, What Happened

October 8, 2007 / by godenver

October 7th 2007, the COT made fireworks on the superspeedway of Talledega, leaving a trail of parts and one final lap push for the win. The race started with the shocker of Waltrip taking pole, in fact, the top 5 spots all belonged to Toyotas. The highest a chase contender qualifyed was 11th. But eventual race winner, Jeff Gordon, took the 34th postion, the farthest chase contender from the lead. But the big surprise was the Candian Villneuve taking sixth. Right of the bat, the race was just a mess, all of Waltrip and a few other teams blasted off into the lead while most of the contenders held back, letting them dual it out. Behind them, Gordon, Johnson, and Mears raced together with a few other chevys. Then in the very back, about 4 seconds behind the lead pack, all the Fords. Gordon held back all race, even being penalized in the waning laps of the race for a pit road violation. Dale Earnhardt Jr., the man who led most of the laps, ended up 41st due to a blown engine, and Waltrip got caught in a wreck. This race was just plain fun for every one. :( Any ways, the last 5 laps, Johnson and gordon hook up and blow Tony Stewart out of the water, to take the lead followed by Gordon, right on his tail. Last lap, just passed the line, Gordon pulls out in front of Stewart, Johnson moves to follow but drops back in line to defend the lead. This sets up the 2.5 mile drag race the would be the final battle for the lead. At the line, it's Gordon, Johnson, and Blaney, about 1/2 a car length behind Johnson, who was tucked onto Gordon's bumper. In all, Gordon sweeps Talledega, takes the points lead, and draws to within 4 race wins of Dale Earnhardt Sr.'s all time Talledega win record. Tony Stewart finishes eighth after he got freigh traine little over halfway down the back stretch. The Following is the Current standings as of Talledega.
