Indy Car, is it a Dinosaur?

October 3, 2007 / by godenver

Indy Car, the premeir open wheel racing league that has had nothing but problems. A couple a years ago, there only was 11 cars in the INDY 500, only because there was some lame excuse about non-standerd tires. Even the name of the league was fought over. Indy car, in my opinion, is slowly dying out, being replaced by NASCAR. With the recent defections of Sam Hornish Jr., Dario Franchitti, and Jaun Pablo Montoya, Indy is not as popular as it was a few years ago. Just watch the races, look at the stands, or even the pit crews. They all have one thing in common, there almost empty of enthusiasim and and there is almost no memoribillia two be found. Indy has become a white elpehant, doomed to extinction, yet not quite ready to give up. In the last few years, they have resorted to breaking tradition of staying almost primarily in America and gonig to an almost predominatly over seas fan base. There is something like five over seas races, 5 US road coruses and ten speedways, one of which is over seas in Japan. Indy Car debuted as a primarily US oval racing league. Now it has more right hand turns than NASCAR makes in a year. In my opinion, NASCAR has become the American auto racing sport and INDY has become another F1. Loved by many, just not loved enough to make the money needed to maintain its racing hertiage. With Dario Franchitti and Sam Hornish Jr. leaving, I don't know how many more INDY League champions their going to crown before the sport finally sinks like the Titanic. It's there on the horizion, the looming storm that is NASCAR, brewing to become the greatest racing specticale in the world, while open wheel racing hides in Europe. This is GODenver, signing off`.
